From Warren's mail: The picture was taken by Paul Bannister, a Ph.D student in solar energy at the Australian National University. I can't remember when the eclipse was, but it was the annular eclipse in late 1990 or early 1991. The picture was taken by laying a 4m parabolic solar dish at an angle, so that each flat mirror element on the dish formed an image of the partially eclipsed sun on the ground & nearly buildings etc. The original print is in colour, but I don't have a colour scanner here at work. The solar dish collects sunlight, focuses it onto a set of copper tubes with water in them, and generates steam, and then passes the steam to an engine to make electricity. * 1991 January 16 (annular) eclipse - SysOp Warren Toomey Department of Computer Science Australian Defence Force Academy Canberra, ACT, Australia. 2600.
